Circle of trust

For me the introduction of this term started while watching a movie Meet the parents

How do you bring more people in the circle of trust ?

Ever worked with someone whom is there in your circle of trust and vice versa. Pure bliss 🌈 .

Ideally when you are managing a team, you want to have multiple people inside your circle of trust and you want to be also in their circle of trust. Like writing good code, relationship building also does take time.

Some pointers on how to build a circle of trust 🟢

  • Develop a setting where you can give candid feedback to your peers. If hard feedback is suppressed or you don't feel comfortable sharing hard feedback it is a big blocker in having a candid relationship.
  • Alignment of core values : Disagree and commit, but make sure that you align on the does and don't of your organisation.
  • Build mutual respect 🤝. Without respect there is no trust. You should be able to belief that they are capable and righteous.
  • Share secrets 🤐: Respect the privacy and keep the conversations discreet. At the same time be a little vulnerable to share what is going in your mind.
  • Enrich your relationship so that there is unconditional acceptance of mistakes. Of course sharing feedback, owning these mistakes and having proper retrospections is part of the game.
  • Need for micromanagement should not be there 🎯. You should be able to fire and forget once the task is allocated.
  • Be transparent, Share all the information that you have about why a decision is being made, what shape the company or the team is in.
  • Celebrate the wins together 🏆, even the small ones.

Sometimes, you might feel certain people can't be trusted. Figure out if they lack the ability or the willingness to meet your trust expectations, and then decide how to handle the situation. Can't dance or won't dance ?
